How to Play Antakshari Online
Antakshari Online runs in your browser and supports two word games: Word Antakshari, a multiplayer chain game inspired by classic Antakshari rules, and Word Scramble, where you unscramble letters before time runs out. This guide explains setup, rules, scoring, and what to avoid.
Getting started
- Open the home page and sign in with Google or choose guest mode with a display name.
- Pick Word Antakshari or Word Scramble on the game chooser screen.
- In the lobby, create a room, join with a six-character code, or queue for a random opponent.
- Wait for all players to join, then the host starts the match when everyone is ready.
Word Antakshari rules
Word Antakshari adapts the familiar Antakshari chain: each player submits a valid English word that begins with the required letter shown on screen. That letter usually comes from the last letter of the previous word.
- Words must be valid English and pass dictionary checks.
- The same word cannot be used twice in one match.
- Submit before the turn timer ends (hosts can choose 10–45 seconds).
- Hosts may restrict categories to places, fruits, vegetables, or movies only.
- On timeout, the host’s chosen rule applies: skip the turn or eliminate the player.
Example chain (original illustration)
Player A opens with river → next letter r → Player B plays rabbit → next letter t → Player C plays table → next letter e, and so on. If Player C had played rabbit again, the duplicate filter would reject it.
Word Scramble rules
Each turn shows jumbled letters. Type the correct English word before the timer expires. Wrong guesses may highlight incorrect letter positions to help you adjust. A solved word earns one point; timeouts reveal the answer to everyone.
Scoring and winning
A valid word on your turn in Word Antakshari earns one point. A correct unscramble in Word Scramble also earns one point. In free-for-all rooms, the player with the highest score when the match ends wins. Team rooms track roster scores; race mode ends when a team reaches the host’s target score.
Wins and total score can appear on the leaderboard when you play signed in. Guest sessions still play full matches but may not persist long-term stats the same way.
Team modes and rematches
Hosts can configure team competitions with custom team names. Race mode ends when a team hits the target score; endurance mode eliminates on-clock players after repeated missed rounds. When a match finishes, the host can request a rematch—other human players must accept before scores reset.
Tips for beginners
- Read the required letter immediately when your turn starts.
- Keep a backup word in mind in case your first choice is already used.
- Start with longer timers (20–30 seconds) until your group learns the pace.
- Use category rooms when playing with children or mixed skill levels.
Tips for experienced players
- Choose endings that give opponents harder starting letters when you know rare words.
- Watch the used-word list to predict which letters are “burned out.”
- In team race mode, prioritize safe words over flashy ones when your team is close to the target score.
Common mistakes
- Typing before checking the required letter.
- Repeating a word that already appears in the match history.
- Submitting plural or invalid spellings under time pressure—validation is strict.
- Creating a room with eliminate-on-timeout when new players are still learning.
What you should not do
- Do not use bots, scripts, or external word tools that break fair play in public rooms.
- Do not harass other players in chat or choose offensive display names.
- Do not share room codes publicly if you intended a private friends-only session.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. Guest mode is the fastest way to try the game. Google sign-in unlocks friends and persistent leaderboard stats.
What happens on a timeout?
The host chooses whether a timeout skips the turn or eliminates the player. The setting is visible when the room is created.
Can the host change rules mid-game?
Room settings are chosen before the match starts. Start a new room if your group wants different timers or categories.
